A mass shooting erupted at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, killing ten people, including one gunman. More than a dozen others suffered injuries during the attack. A Hanukkah event took place at the beach when the shooting began. Authorities continue investigating the motive behind the violence.
New South Wales Police confirmed that the attack occurred on Sunday at the popular beach. Police said ten people died, including one of the attackers. Officers reported that another suspected gunman remains in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic and graphic scenes along the beachfront. Several witnesses said they saw more than a dozen people lying injured on the ground. They also reported blood covering large areas as emergency crews arrived.
Witness accounts and official warnings emerge
NSW Police issued an alert on X around 7:30 p.m. local time. Officers urged the public to take shelter or avoid Bondi Beach entirely. Police released the warning after receiving reports of a possible shooting.
Videos shared on X and other platforms showed crowds fleeing in panic. The footage captured the sound of repeated gunshots and police sirens. People ran in multiple directions as officers moved toward the scene.
Additional videos later appeared online showing police detaining two suspects. Footage showed officers holding the suspects on a civilian bridge. Earlier images appeared to show gunfire from what looked like sniper rifles.
Eyewitnesses claimed attackers fired more than 50 shots during the incident. They said the gunfire targeted beachgoers, nearby civilians, and vehicles.
Leaders respond as investigation continues
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a written statement on X following the attack. He expressed condolences to the victims and their families. He also urged the public to follow police guidance and remain cautious.
“The scenes in Bondi are shocking and distressing,” Albanese wrote. He said police and emergency responders worked urgently to save lives. He said his thoughts remained with everyone affected.
Albanese added that federal authorities are coordinating with NSW Police. He said officials would share updates as investigators confirm more information. He again urged people nearby to rely on official police instructions.
Around 2,000 people attended the Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach. Authorities have not confirmed whether the attackers deliberately targeted the gathering. Investigators continue working to determine the motive behind the shooting.
