Israeli Military Expands Operations
Israel’s military says it has completed a “broad strike” targeting defence systems in western Iran, marking a major escalation in the rapidly unfolding crisis. The strikes follow joint US-Israeli air operations that began early Saturday, dramatically raising tensions across the region.
The confrontation comes amid weeks of strained diplomacy between Washington and Tehran over efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear programme. However, in a video posted on social media, US President Donald Trump suggested the strikes were about more than nuclear concerns, referencing grievances dating back to the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Iran Responds Across the Gulf
In retaliation, Iran launched attacks on US military assets across the Gulf region, targeting bases in multiple countries, though Oman was not included. The strikes signal a widening conflict that now stretches well beyond Iran’s borders.
Trump addressed the Iranian public directly, urging civilians to seek safety during the attacks and later calling on them to rise up against their government. “When we are finished, take over your government,” he said, framing the confrontation as a potential turning point for Iran’s future.
Global Calls for Restraint
World leaders have responded with alarm. UN Secretary General António Guterres urged all sides to de-escalate, and the UN Security Council is set to convene to discuss the growing crisis.
The fighting has also disrupted civilian life across the region. Several countries temporarily closed their airspace, leading to widespread flight cancellations and diversions. Aircraft headed to cities such as Tel Aviv and Dubai were forced to reroute or turn back, underscoring how quickly the conflict is impacting international travel and regional stability.
