A major international partnership has announced plans to invest $1 billion in a new artificial intelligence-powered satellite network, marking one of the largest recent investments in space-based Earth observation and data processing technology.
The project, unveiled during France’s International Space Summit, will significantly expand the Altair satellite constellation and strengthen cooperation between companies from France, the United Arab Emirates, and other global partners.
The initiative brings together Loft Orbital, UAE-based Marlan Space, their joint venture Orbitworks, Earth observation company BlackSky, and artificial intelligence specialist Mistral AI. The group aims to build an advanced satellite system capable of delivering intelligence, monitoring, and data analysis services to customers across Europe, the Middle East, and other international markets.
Under the new plan, the Altair constellation will grow from the previously announced 10 satellites to a fleet of 50 satellites. The expansion reflects increasing demand for real-time Earth observation and AI-powered data services from governments, commercial organizations, and security agencies.
The Altair program was originally introduced as a sovereign intelligence platform designed to provide countries and organizations with greater control over strategic information gathering and analysis. The expanded constellation is expected to deliver significantly broader coverage and enhanced operational capabilities.
According to project leaders, the satellite network will combine a variety of technologies and sensor systems. Some satellites will carry radar instruments, while others will use optical imaging and additional sensing technologies. This approach is intended to provide a more complete picture of events occurring on Earth.
One of the most important features of the constellation is its ability to process information directly in space. Rather than transmitting all collected data back to ground stations for analysis, the satellites will use artificial intelligence tools to evaluate information while still in orbit.
Developers say this capability can dramatically improve the speed of decision-making and reduce the amount of data that needs to be transferred to Earth. The system is expected to support a wide range of applications, including maritime monitoring, wildfire detection, disaster response, infrastructure protection, and security operations.
Maritime domain awareness is one area expected to benefit significantly from the technology. Governments and commercial operators increasingly rely on satellite intelligence to monitor shipping routes, detect unusual activity, and improve safety across international waters.
Wildfire monitoring and disaster management are also expected to become key functions of the constellation. By analyzing data in real time, satellites could help emergency services identify threats earlier and improve response efforts during natural disasters.
The project also highlights the growing role of the UAE in the global space industry. Orbitworks will manufacture the satellites in Abu Dhabi, reinforcing the country’s ambition to become a major center for advanced space technology and satellite production.
The first ten satellites are already under production and are scheduled to begin launching in October. Additional launches will follow as the broader constellation is assembled over the coming years.
BlackSky will contribute optical imaging satellites to the network through its advanced Gen-3 satellite platform. These satellites are designed to provide high-quality imagery and support rapid monitoring capabilities for customers requiring timely intelligence.
Launch services for the project are expected to be provided primarily by MaiaSpace, a subsidiary of ArianeGroup. The company has been selected as the preferred launch provider for the constellation, further strengthening European participation in the program.
Loft Orbital Chief Executive Officer Pierre-Damien Vaujour said the project represents a major step forward in combining artificial intelligence with satellite operations. He noted that the constellation is designed to support next-generation AI applications and create new opportunities for data-driven services in space.
The announcement follows another major development involving Marlan Space. Investment group IHC recently acquired an 80 percent stake in the company, signaling a broader commitment to expanding its presence in the global space sector.
IHC Chief Executive Officer Syed Basar Shueb described the investment as an opportunity to connect advanced technology, international partnerships, and strategic capital. He said the initiative demonstrates how cooperation between France and the UAE can help shape the future of the rapidly growing space economy.
As governments and businesses seek faster access to intelligence and real-time data, the new constellation is expected to play an important role in the next generation of satellite services. The project also reflects the increasing importance of artificial intelligence in transforming how information is collected, processed, and used from space.
