Abu Dhabi is continuing efforts to strengthen its mental health system by expanding access to care and focusing on early support for residents across the emirate.
The Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DoH) said its strategy aims to move beyond traditional reactive treatment models and provide proactive, person-centred care that supports long-term well-being and improves quality of life.
Officials said the approach focuses on identifying mental health needs earlier and ensuring individuals receive ongoing support through a wider network of healthcare services. The plan is designed to make mental healthcare more accessible while addressing the growing demand for support across different age groups and communities.
As part of the initiative, the department plans to double patient capacity within the next two years. The expansion is expected to improve access to mental health services and reduce waiting times for residents seeking care.
The healthcare workforce has also grown significantly. According to DoH, the number of mental health professionals in Abu Dhabi has increased by 81 percent since 2022. The expansion includes psychiatrists, psychologists, therapists, and other specialists who provide care across the emirate.
Officials said strengthening the workforce is a key part of building a more resilient mental healthcare system. Increased staffing allows healthcare providers to offer a broader range of services while improving support for patients with different mental health needs.
Primary healthcare has become another major focus of the strategy. The department reported that 1,930 family physicians have received training to diagnose and manage common mental health conditions. This allows patients to access support through primary healthcare centres, making mental health services more available within local communities.
Healthcare leaders believe integrating mental health into primary care can help identify concerns earlier and encourage more people to seek support when needed. Early intervention is widely viewed as an important step in improving long-term health outcomes.
Mental healthcare services in Abu Dhabi are now supported by a network of 143 facilities across the emirate. The network includes 13 specialised mental health centres staffed by 640 qualified professionals.
The expanded infrastructure is intended to provide a full range of services, from early assessment and counselling to specialised treatment and long-term support. Officials said the goal is to ensure residents can access appropriate care close to where they live.
Abu Dhabi is also investing in advanced treatment options as part of its mental health strategy. The Department of Health has introduced Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a non-invasive and evidence-based therapy used to treat certain mental health conditions.
TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain and does not require surgery or medication. Healthcare officials said the treatment offers an additional option for patients who may benefit from alternative therapies.
The introduction of innovative treatments reflects Abu Dhabi’s broader effort to modernise healthcare services and provide access to internationally recognised medical solutions.
Mental health continues to be a growing priority for healthcare systems worldwide. Experts increasingly emphasize the importance of early support, community-based services, and wider access to treatment to improve overall well-being.
Through workforce growth, expanded facilities, physician training, and advanced therapies, Abu Dhabi aims to create a more comprehensive mental healthcare system that meets the evolving needs of its population.
Officials said the continued expansion of Abu Dhabi mental healthcare services will help strengthen community well-being while ensuring residents have greater access to timely and effective support across the emirate.
