The UAE is elevating its global publishing profile through the Emirates Publishers Association’s (EPA) participation in the prestigious Bologna Children’s Book Fair. This event, held from April 13 to 16 in Bologna, Italy, is recognized as the world’s leading platform for children’s and young adult literature, drawing a diverse array of industry professionals from top publishers to illustrators and content specialists. EPA’s presence at this critical international gathering underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering a vibrant publishing sector and expanding the reach of Emirati literary talent on a global scale. The fair serves as a crucial gateway for fostering international collaboration, facilitating rights exchange, and integrating Emirati publishers into the broader global market.
A primary objective of EPA’s participation is to empower Emirati publishers to penetrate new global markets, forge strategic international partnerships, and keep abreast of the latest trends influencing young generation’s literature. The association meticulously curated a selection of Emirati publishing houses, showcasing the rich diversity and innovative spirit of the local industry. This group included Alamkoum Publishing & Distribution, celebrated for its unique fusion of storytelling and play-based learning; Mimo Quirks, distinguished by its focus on compelling visual storytelling and artistic design; and Ghaf Publishing, dedicated to cultivating a reading culture through high-quality books deeply inspired by local identity and heritage. This curated exhibition highlighted the unique narratives and creative approaches emerging from the UAE.
Rashid Al Kous, Executive Director of EPA, articulated that this initiative is an integral component of a “comprehensive strategic vision” aimed at significantly advancing the UAE’s publishing sector. He emphasized the fair’s role in enabling valuable knowledge exchange and fostering collaboration with leading international publishers, which is instrumental in bolstering the competitiveness of Arabic literature. Al Kous further stated, “The fair represents a strategic platform for anticipating the future of children’s publishing and engaging with the rapid transformations shaping this vital sector. It enables our publishers to develop more innovative, competitive, and sustainable models that contribute to building generations of readers connected to knowledge, an objective that lies at the core of our strategic priorities.” This highlights the proactive approach to future-proofing the industry.
EPA’s consistent engagement in major international events like the Bologna Children’s Book Fair reaffirms its steadfast, long-term commitment to nurturing and strengthening the local publishing ecosystem. Through strategic partnerships, dynamic knowledge exchange programs, and extensive global exposure, the association is actively working to broaden the reach of Arabic content worldwide. This sustained effort is pivotal in cementing the UAE’s burgeoning reputation as a significant regional and international hub for the publishing and wider book industry. The participation reinforces the nation’s ambition to be a leader in literary development and cultural exchange, ensuring Emirati voices resonate globally.
