Gulf Cryo is preparing to launch commercial operations at its new carbon capture facility in Abu Dhabi within the coming weeks. The project will expand the company’s industrial decarbonization network in the United Arab Emirates and increase local supplies of commercial carbon dioxide.
The Middle Eastern industrial gas supplier announced the development during ADIPEC 2026. Georgios Beretsos, the company’s chief commercial officer, confirmed that the new site will soon begin operations. It will join Gulf Cryo’s existing carbon capture plant in Ras Al Khaimah.
The two facilities will strengthen the company’s position in the UAE. The country remains its largest regional market and a key part of its long-term growth plans. Gulf Cryo has supplied industrial gases to businesses across the country for decades.
Its customers operate in several major sectors. These include petrochemicals, healthcare, metals, manufacturing, and oil and gas. Demand from these industries has supported the company’s growth and created new opportunities for lower-carbon production.
The Abu Dhabi project will capture emissions from industrial sources and turn them into useful commercial products. The facility will collect, purify, and liquefy carbon dioxide before supplying it to customers in local markets.
This process is known as carbon capture and utilization, or CCU. It allows companies to recover carbon dioxide from industrial operations and use it as a feedstock for other activities. The approach can support efforts to reduce emissions while creating value from gases that might otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
Food and beverage producers are among the main customers expected to use the new supply. These businesses need high-quality liquid carbon dioxide for several production processes. Food processors use it in preservation and packaging, while beverage companies rely on it to add carbonation to drinks.
Municipal water desalination plants are another target market. These facilities can use carbon dioxide during water treatment to support remineralization. The process helps restore minerals and adjust the chemical balance of desalinated water before it reaches consumers.
By serving these industries locally, Gulf Cryo aims to improve access to an important industrial gas. The new plant could also reduce the need for customers to depend on supplies transported over longer distances.
Beretsos said recent supply chain disruptions have shown why local production and reliable distribution networks matter. Businesses in many industries have faced pressure from transport delays, changing costs, and interruptions to international supply routes.
These challenges have encouraged companies to strengthen their domestic supply systems. Producing essential industrial gases closer to customers can help reduce exposure to external disruptions and improve delivery reliability.
Gulf Cryo sees the Abu Dhabi facility as part of a wider plan to expand carbon capture and utilization across heavy industries in the Middle East. The company is focusing on point-source capture, which collects emissions directly from industrial facilities rather than removing carbon dioxide from the wider atmosphere.
The captured gas can then be processed for commercial use. This creates a link between industrial emissions and businesses that need carbon dioxide as part of their operations. It also supports the development of local markets for recovered carbon products.
The company is continuing to invest in other parts of its industrial gas network. Its plans include expanding regional air separation units, known as ASUs. These facilities separate gases from the air and produce bulk oxygen, nitrogen, and argon for industrial customers.
Gulf Cryo operates across ten countries. Its investment in air separation capacity is intended to support growing demand from customers in several sectors. Oxygen is widely used in healthcare and manufacturing, while nitrogen and argon serve a range of industrial and technical applications.
The Abu Dhabi carbon capture project adds another part to this regional expansion. Together with the Ras Al Khaimah facility, it gives Gulf Cryo a stronger base for supplying recovered carbon dioxide to local businesses.
The upcoming launch also reflects growing interest in practical industrial decarbonization across the Middle East. For Gulf Cryo, the UAE offers an important market for combining established industrial gas services with new carbon management solutions.
As commercial operations approach, the company is preparing to connect captured emissions with customers in food production, beverages, and water treatment. The facility is expected to strengthen local CO2 supply while supporting the wider use of carbon capture technology in the region.
