Construction has officially begun on Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi, a major new performing arts venue that is expected to become one of the region’s leading cultural destinations. The landmark project will rise on Saadiyat Island and is scheduled to open its doors in 2030.
The new venue has been commissioned by the Department of Culture and Tourism in Abu Dhabi as part of the emirate’s long-term plan to strengthen its cultural sector. Once complete, it will host performances and events throughout the year while attracting artists and audiences from around the world.
Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi was designed by the late Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. The project is one of his final cultural works and features a modern design with flowing metallic forms inspired by movement and performance. The building’s exterior has been created to resemble soft fabric that appears to flow across the site.
Officials say the venue will become a permanent home for opera, ballet, theatre, concerts, and many other live performances. It will offer a full calendar of events across all 365 days of the year, making it one of the busiest cultural venues in the region.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, said the project represents a major investment in the future of the emirate’s cultural landscape. He said the new venue will welcome leading performers, artistic companies, and creative talent from the UAE, the wider region, and countries around the world.
He also said Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi will encourage cultural exchange through international partnerships, artist residency programs, and large-scale productions. Officials believe the venue will inspire future generations of artists while helping Abu Dhabi strengthen its position as a global center for arts and creativity.
The performing arts complex will include several different venues designed to host events of various sizes. The largest indoor performance hall will have seating for more than 2,000 people. An outdoor amphitheater with space for 3,500 guests will provide a setting for concerts and large public performances.
The development will also include a 400-seat studio theatre designed for smaller productions and experimental performances. A separate 250-seat jazz venue will provide space for live music and intimate concerts. Together, these facilities will allow the complex to host multiple events at the same time.
The venue will stand near the Saadiyat Cultural District, an area that has become home to many of Abu Dhabi’s most important cultural attractions. The district continues to grow as new museums, galleries, and creative spaces are added to support the emirate’s vision of becoming a global destination for art, culture, and education.
Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi is expected to use advanced technology throughout the building. Officials describe it as one of the most technologically advanced performing arts venues in the region. Modern stage systems, digital production equipment, and flexible performance spaces will help support a wide variety of shows and artistic experiences.
The project is also expected to create new opportunities for local artists and performers. By welcoming international productions while supporting regional talent, the venue aims to encourage collaboration and help develop the performing arts sector across the UAE.
The start of construction marks an important step for the project after years of planning and design. Work will continue over the next several years before the venue opens in 2030.
When completed, Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi will offer much more than a traditional theatre. It is expected to become a cultural landmark where audiences can enjoy world-class performances, artists can develop new ideas, and creative communities can connect throughout the year. The new venue reflects Abu Dhabi’s continued investment in arts, culture, and international collaboration while creating a lasting home for live performance in the region.
