Abu Dhabi has announced a new parking payment system that will allow drivers to pay automatically without using coins, cards, or paper tickets. The move is part of the emirate’s broader effort to improve transport services through smart technology and digital solutions.
The new initiative, known as the Free Flow Parking System, will use automatic number plate recognition technology to identify vehicles entering and leaving selected parking areas. Parking fees will then be deducted automatically from the driver’s Darb e-wallet account.
The system is being introduced by Q Mobility, the company responsible for managing Abu Dhabi’s public parking network and the Darb road toll system. Officials said the new approach will make parking easier, reduce delays, and lower the risk of fines caused by payment errors.
Under the new model, drivers will no longer need to display parking tickets on their vehicle windscreens. They will also avoid the need to search for parking meters or complete manual payment transactions before leaving a parking area.
The chargeable parking period will begin as soon as a vehicle enters a designated parking facility. When the vehicle exits, the system will automatically calculate the parking fee and deduct the amount from the user’s Darb e-wallet.
Authorities said the first phase of the project will be launched in several locations across Abu Dhabi. These sites will include selected multistorey parking facilities and some private parking areas. Officials have not yet released the names of the locations that will participate in the initial rollout.
The project forms part of Abu Dhabi’s wider strategy to increase the use of digital services and modern transport technology. Transport authorities aim to provide a more convenient experience for residents and visitors while improving the efficiency of parking operations.
Q Mobility has advised motorists to ensure that sufficient funds remain available in their Darb e-wallet accounts. The digital wallet is already used to pay road tolls and public parking fees throughout Abu Dhabi. Drivers who fail to maintain a positive balance could face penalties or fines when using the new system.
The introduction of automatic parking payments comes as Abu Dhabi continues to expand its paid parking network across the emirate. Authorities have steadily increased the number of regulated parking zones in growing residential and commercial areas.
A major expansion took place on May 6 when a new paid parking zone covering more than 10,000 parking spaces was launched in Mohamed bin Zayed City. The system currently operates in the area’s commercial districts, including sectors ME9 and ME12.
The expansion followed earlier parking projects introduced in other parts of Mohamed bin Zayed City during the previous year. Additional paid parking services were also launched in the outer areas of Al Shahama, one of Abu Dhabi’s rapidly developing suburbs.
In January, transport authorities expanded paid parking to Mussaffah. The first phase covered several sectors, including M1, M2, M3, M4, and M24. Officials said these projects are designed to improve parking management, increase space availability, and support urban growth.
As Abu Dhabi’s population continues to grow, demand for parking spaces has increased across residential, commercial, and industrial districts. Smart parking technology is viewed as an important tool to help manage this demand while improving the overall user experience.
Industry experts note that automatic number plate recognition systems are becoming more common around the world. These systems help reduce traffic congestion at parking entrances and exits while allowing operators to manage facilities more efficiently.
Q Mobility was established in 2024 by Abu Dhabi holding company ADQ. The company oversees the operation, management, and development of the Darb toll network and the Mawaqif public parking system. It operates under the supervision of the Abu Dhabi Department of Municipalities and Transport.
Officials believe the Free Flow Parking System will support Abu Dhabi’s vision of becoming a smarter and more connected city. By reducing manual processes and increasing automation, authorities hope to deliver faster, safer, and more convenient transport services.
The upcoming launch represents another step in the emirate’s digital transformation efforts. Once fully implemented, the system is expected to simplify parking for thousands of drivers while helping transport authorities manage parking facilities more effectively across Abu Dhabi.
