Abu Dhabi has launched a major infrastructure upgrade in Al Ain with a new dual carriageway project designed to improve traffic flow, safety, and connectivity between key areas of the city. The project links Al Sarouj area to the industrial zone and is part of wider efforts to support urban growth and modern transport systems in the emirate.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport has started construction work on the project, which carries a total cost of about Dh291.11 million. The road is expected to be completed by the end of June 2027. Officials say the development is aimed at improving daily travel conditions for residents while supporting long-term city expansion plans.
The new Al Ain road project will create a dual carriageway stretching around 3.2 kilometers in each direction. It will connect the Al Masoud Interchange in the industrial area with a new intersection at Al Saqr Roundabout on the Al Sarouj–Industrial Area Road. The route is expected to significantly reduce congestion in one of the city’s growing traffic corridors.
According to infrastructure officials, the project is designed to handle increasing vehicle demand caused by rapid urban development in Al Ain. As population and economic activity grow, traffic density in the area has increased, making road upgrades necessary to maintain smooth movement and reduce travel delays.
The project also includes several major engineering works. These include new intersections, advanced drainage systems, and a box culvert designed to manage rainwater and improve infrastructure resilience. A key feature of the project is a 120-meter tunnel that will pass through Jabal Al-Naqfa, built according to modern engineering standards.
In addition to road construction, the project will also introduce supporting infrastructure improvements. These include modern lighting systems, road signage, and dedicated cycling and pedestrian routes. Officials confirmed that a 5.2-kilometer cycling track and 6-kilometer pedestrian walkway will be developed alongside the road, encouraging safer and more sustainable transport options.
Public transport access is also part of the plan. Six new bus stops will be added along the route to improve connectivity for commuters who rely on public transportation. This is expected to make travel more accessible and reduce dependence on private vehicles in the area.
Urban landscaping is another key element of the project. Around 500 trees will be planted along the corridor to improve the visual environment and support the emirate’s broader sustainability and green development goals. Officials say the design aims to create not only a functional transport route but also a more attractive urban space.
The Department of Municipalities and Transport says the Al Ain road project reflects its ongoing commitment to upgrading infrastructure across the emirate. The focus is on improving safety, reducing travel time, and ensuring that road networks keep pace with population growth and economic development.
The project is also expected to enhance road safety by separating traffic flows through the dual carriageway design. This helps reduce congestion-related accidents and improves overall driving conditions in the area.
Authorities believe that once completed, the new road will play an important role in supporting industrial activity and daily commuting in Al Ain. By improving access between residential and industrial zones, the project is expected to strengthen economic efficiency and mobility across the city.
The development is part of a wider infrastructure strategy in Abu Dhabi that focuses on long-term urban planning and sustainable transport systems. Similar projects across the emirate have aimed to integrate road networks with cycling paths, pedestrian access, and improved public transport services.
As construction continues, residents can expect phased traffic management measures in the area to support ongoing works. Officials have encouraged motorists to follow updated road guidance to ensure safety during the construction period.
