Dubai is strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading sports business hubs through major investments in infrastructure, tourism, and international sporting events. The emirate is using sport as a key driver of economic growth while expanding its role in global investment, innovation, and entertainment.
The government’s long-term vision is outlined in the Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033, which aims to significantly increase the contribution of sport to the local economy. Officials expect the sports sector to contribute Dh18.3 billion to gross domestic product by 2033, up from the current Dh10.17 billion. The target represents growth of nearly 80 percent over the next decade.
The strategy also seeks to boost attendance at major sporting events from 1.67 million visitors each year to more than 4.1 million. At the same time, Dubai plans to increase the number of major sporting events hosted in the emirate by as much as 250 percent.
The sports sector has become one of the major pillars of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, which focuses on building a diversified and innovation-driven economy. Officials believe the continued expansion of sports tourism, media rights, sponsorship agreements, digital content, and sports technology will create new economic opportunities across multiple industries.
Dubai currently hosts more than 400 local and international sporting events every year. The city also welcomes around 100 training camps for leading international clubs and national teams. These activities generate business for hotels, airlines, restaurants, retailers, transport providers, and other tourism-related industries.
Among Dubai’s most recognized sporting events is the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The tournament regularly attracts many of the world’s top tennis players while generating extensive international media coverage that promotes Dubai as a global destination for sports and tourism.
Tournament Director Salah Tahlak said the event continues to strengthen Dubai’s international reputation while supporting tourism, investment, and business partnerships through world-class sporting competitions.
The Dubai Marathon has also become one of the city’s signature international events. Every year it attracts thousands of runners from around the world, providing economic benefits for hotels, airlines, restaurants, retail businesses, and local service providers.
Ahmed Al Kamali, General Coordinator of the Dubai Marathon, said major sporting events create strong tourism, media, and investment returns while supporting Dubai’s long-term economic growth strategy.
Beyond tennis and marathon racing, Dubai has expanded its portfolio to include international golf tournaments, mixed martial arts competitions, cricket events, cycling races, running festivals, and marine sports championships. This wide variety of events helps attract visitors with different interests while increasing tourism throughout the year.
Dubai has also entered professional basketball through the Dubai Basketball project. The team’s participation in the European ABA League represents another step in the emirate’s plan to strengthen its position as an international destination for sports investment and competition.
Esports has become another important area of growth. Dubai continues to invest in gaming and digital entertainment as part of its broader strategy to support the creative economy and attract younger audiences.
The Dubai Esports and Games Festival has become one of the region’s leading gaming events. According to Ahmed Al Khaja, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment, the festival reflects the rapid expansion of esports while creating new business opportunities in digital content, technology, and entertainment.
Football also remains an important contributor to Dubai’s sports economy. Many leading international clubs and national teams choose the emirate for winter training camps because of its modern sports facilities, favorable climate, and high-quality hospitality services.
Dubai is also strengthening its global influence by hosting the Dubai International Sports Conference. The annual event brings together sports executives, athletes, investors, and technology experts to discuss the future of sports business, artificial intelligence, innovation, and investment.
Officials say international sporting events continue to increase Dubai’s global visibility through television broadcasts, digital platforms, and social media, reaching hundreds of millions of viewers worldwide. With continued investment in facilities, technology, and international partnerships, Dubai aims to further establish itself as one of the world’s leading centers for sports, tourism, and economic development over the coming decade.
