The United Arab Emirates is moving forward with plans to integrate Avalanche blockchain technology into its national digital identity platform, a step that could become one of the largest government-backed uses of public blockchain infrastructure to date.
The initiative will bring Avalanche technology into the Digital Vault feature of UAE PASS, the country’s official digital identity system. The platform is already used by more than 12.5 million citizens, residents, and visitors and provides access to thousands of public and private services across the country.
The partnership was announced on Sept. 14, 2026, by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, consulting firm Deca4, and Ava Labs, the company behind Avalanche technology. While the agreement has been confirmed, the upgraded system has not yet been launched.
Once operational, the new blockchain-powered infrastructure will allow users to securely store, request, verify, and share official digital documents through UAE PASS.
Officials involved in the project say the goal is to simplify document verification while improving security and reducing the need for manual checks. The system is expected to help users share verified records more efficiently with government agencies, businesses, and service providers.
UAE PASS has become a key part of the country’s digital transformation strategy. The platform currently supports access to more than 15,000 services offered by over 350 government and private sector organizations.
By adding blockchain technology, authorities hope to strengthen trust in digital documents and streamline verification processes.
Rather than relying on Avalanche’s public shared network, the UAE will use a dedicated Avalanche Layer 1 blockchain designed specifically for the project. This approach will allow greater control over network settings, security measures, and operational requirements.
The customized blockchain is intended to improve both speed and reliability when handling document authentication requests.
Under the planned system, users will be able to share digital documents such as educational certificates, business licenses, and other official records. The blockchain network will then verify the authenticity of those documents through secure digital validation processes.
Supporters of the technology argue that blockchain systems can reduce fraud risks because records can be verified quickly and securely without relying on traditional paper-based procedures.
Ava Labs described the initiative as one of the most significant examples of a national government using public blockchain infrastructure in a real-world environment.
The announcement highlights the growing interest among governments in adopting blockchain technology for public services. While blockchain has long been associated with digital assets and cryptocurrencies, officials in many countries are increasingly exploring its use in identity management, record keeping, and administrative services.
The UAE has emerged as one of the leading countries pursuing digital government initiatives. Authorities have invested heavily in technology-driven services aimed at reducing paperwork, improving efficiency, and expanding online access to government functions.
The move also reflects a broader trend in which public agencies are testing blockchain solutions for large-scale applications.
One notable example came from the United States, where the California Department of Motor Vehicles adopted a customized Avalanche blockchain system to digitize approximately 42 million vehicle titles. Officials said the project was designed to simplify title transfers and modernize record management.
The UAE project could potentially reach an even larger range of services because UAE PASS is used across numerous government and private-sector platforms.
The announcement also had an immediate impact on cryptocurrency markets. Avalanche’s native token, AVAX, rose more than 3% following news of the partnership.
Market data showed the token trading near $7.48 after the announcement. Trading activity also increased, with daily volume rising by roughly 14% to around $249 million.
Analysts noted that investor interest was supported by the potential for a major government implementation of Avalanche technology. Large-scale public sector projects are often viewed as a sign of growing confidence in blockchain infrastructure beyond the cryptocurrency industry.
Despite the positive market reaction, the integration remains under development. No official launch date has been announced, and the Digital Vault feature has not yet been activated on the new blockchain network.
If successfully implemented, the project could become a significant milestone in the adoption of blockchain technology for national digital identity systems. It would also strengthen the UAE’s position as a leader in digital government innovation and emerging technology initiatives.
The partnership demonstrates how blockchain is increasingly being explored not only as a financial technology but also as a tool for managing trusted digital services on a national scale.
