The United States has proposed a new round of discussions involving Ukraine and Russia in an effort to advance diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war that has continued for more than four years.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday that Washington suggested a trilateral meeting involving representatives from the United States, Ukraine and Russia. According to Zelenskiy, the United Arab Emirates has been proposed as the possible location for the talks.
Speaking to reporters, Zelenskiy said the American side had suggested holding discussions at a technical level in a three-party format. He added that Ukraine is now waiting for further details from the United States regarding the timing of the proposed meeting.
The announcement comes after Zelenskiy met U.S. President Donald Trump during the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week. The two leaders discussed ongoing efforts to find a path toward ending the conflict that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Following the meeting between the presidents, Ukrainian and American officials held additional discussions focused on specific details related to future diplomatic steps. Zelenskiy said those talks examined possible approaches that could help move negotiations forward.
According to the Ukrainian leader, further consultations are expected in the coming days. He said Ukraine plans to coordinate closely with European partners, while American officials are expected to engage directly with Russian representatives.
Zelenskiy indicated that the parties could have a clearer understanding of the next stage of diplomacy within about ten days. He said the process could result either in a new direction for negotiations or a more concrete outcome.
The Kremlin also signaled that a trilateral meeting involving the United States and Ukraine could take place soon. Russian officials did not provide additional details about the proposed discussions but acknowledged the possibility of future talks.
The United Arab Emirates has increasingly emerged as a venue for international diplomacy in recent years. The country has hosted high-level meetings involving world leaders and has played a role in several mediation and humanitarian efforts.
Its position as a neutral meeting location has made it a preferred destination for sensitive diplomatic discussions involving multiple parties.
The proposed talks come as international leaders continue searching for ways to reduce tensions and eventually end the conflict. The war has had major consequences for regional security, global energy markets and international trade since it began.
Zelenskiy also revealed that he asked Trump to discuss the Ukraine conflict during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi is currently visiting the United States on a state visit, and Ukraine hopes China can contribute to broader international efforts aimed at reducing tensions.
China has repeatedly called for dialogue and political solutions to the conflict while maintaining diplomatic relations with both Moscow and Kyiv. As a result, Beijing continues to be viewed as an important participant in discussions surrounding the war.
The Ukrainian president said he remains hopeful that ongoing diplomatic engagement could help reduce military tensions before the arrival of winter. Seasonal conditions have often affected military operations and humanitarian challenges throughout the conflict.
At the same time, Zelenskiy warned European partners about what he described as continued hybrid threats from Russia. He said Ukraine had offered assistance and cooperation to countries facing such challenges.
Western governments have previously expressed concerns about sabotage incidents, cyber activity and other security threats across Europe. Russia has denied involvement in those allegations.
Despite the challenges, diplomatic activity surrounding the conflict has increased in recent weeks. Meetings between world leaders, discussions among international partners and renewed efforts by mediators have all contributed to growing attention on possible negotiation pathways.
While no formal agreement has yet been announced, the proposed UAE-hosted meeting represents another attempt to bring key parties together for direct discussions. Officials from Ukraine, Russia and the United States are expected to continue consultations as preparations move forward.
For now, attention remains focused on whether the proposed talks can take place and whether they can help create momentum toward a broader diplomatic process aimed at ending one of the world’s most significant ongoing conflicts.
